Chapter 5

Jillian

It’s summertime, but the breeze that comes in off the water keeps the night air from being too warm. We are sitting in the gazebo with our coffees and talking the daylight away. It’s easier to be with Dale like this, away from our respective responsibilities. I feel less like I’m doing something I shouldn’t, which is being too familiar with a patient. However, I can’t put off my job forever, and I know I will eventually have to do my job.

“I need to check your oxygen level,” I tell him. “Want to head back?”

“Not really, no,” he mutters, “but I know you need to do it.” He stands and offers his hand, and I take it, not because I need to, but because I want to. It is the first time we have touched in a non-medical way — the most skin-to-skin contact we have had so far. His grip is solid and sure. I stand slowly, as if I’m stiff, but it’s only because I want to draw out the touch for as long as I can.

As we walk away from the park, Dale says, “So, let’s say that I make a miraculous recovery in the next couple of days. I mean, like a real starfish re-growing a lost arm miraculously.”

“That wouldn’t be unheard of,” I reply, biting back the part where I add, “but it’s not very likely.” Instead, I ask, “Why do you ask?”

Instead of answering, he picks my brain again. “Well, if I’m given a clean bill of health early, you will not have to go out of your way to check on me twice a day, will you?”

It’s not out of my way, I think. It’s the two stops of the day that I think about the most!

“Even if you turn into a super-starfish man, I’d probably still have to look in on you and check your stats as planned,” I say. “Doctor’s orders.”

“Doctor’s orders,” he repeats, nodding. “We don’t want to get you in trouble with the boss.”

Back at Dale’s place, I put him through the usual paces. His lungs sound worlds better than they did compare to this morning. I reflect on the facts that he hasn’t coughed once in my presence this whole afternoon and early evening and that his voice has smoothed out and is now deep and only slightly rough. I begin to wonder if he is willing himself to be well again.

Sitting on the couch and packing up my gear, one of my knees brushes against his. Even that touch makes my flesh jump. I have to get out of here.

“Well,” I say, and my voice sounds a little too emphatic, “I should be going, let you get on with your evening.”

“That’s right,” he says, standing as well. “I want to get on with my evening.”

The flustered feeling in my stomach dampens a bit under the wet blanket of disappointment. Maybe I’ve misread the situation.

“Big plans?” I ask.

He is looking at me, standing close. “Big plans,” he confirms.
